I’m Mike Williams, and Karate has been my passion for over four decades. Teaching traditional Karate to both kids and adults brings me immense satisfaction, and I’m thrilled to share my knowledge with you here.
With a 6th dan black belt and a Shihan licence (teaching licence) awarded by the Nippon Karate-Do Kai in Japan, I’ve had the privilege of serving as Australia’s official representative for Mabuni Kenzo Soke and now Mabuni Tsukasa Soke since 2003.
In 2022, the Nippon Karate-Do Kai, honoured me with the title of Kyoshi, reflecting my commitment and dedication to Karate.
What I’ve Achieved
Students Mentored
Humble Beginnings
Back in 1982, my Karate journey began. Looking for fitness and self-defence skills, I stepped into a local traditional Karate Dojo. Over the years, I advanced to earn my black belt and discovered a passion for teaching.
Fast forward, and I took a leap that changed everything. With just a handful of junior students, including my own kids, I started my own Dojo. The journey wasn’t easy, but it was definitely rewarding!
I even introduced an after-school Karate program at a nearby primary school. And guess what? One of those young students from way back still trains with me and is now a 4th dan Black Belt – talk about transformation!
But my story doesn’t end there. I was always looking for ways to learn more, I tried affiliating with other karate organisations, but I never found the right fit.
The Japan Connection
My thirst for knowledge led me on a journey to the heart of Karate in Japan. Through my determination and persistence, I received an invitation that forever changed my Karate experience.
In 2003, I found myself in Japan, this was a life-changing experience and the first of many training trips. It gave me a deeper understanding of Karate and its culture, even more so as I was staying at the house of my newly found Sensei who I had just met in person for the first time.
A pivotal moment arrived when I stood in the original house of Mabuni Kenwa the founder of Shito-Ryu Karate, where his son Mabuni Kenzo Soke shared invaluable insights during a private meeting.
I was honoured to be appointed as the official representative of Mabuni Kenzo Soke in Australia. That moment wasn’t just an honour; it was a testament to the determination that brought me to this point.
During one of my many trips to Japan, I found myself learning kata bunkai in a restaurant car park while waiting for a table with my Sensei. Lesson learned: Karate knows no bounds – even car parks become dojos! 🥋🚗
My Journey Continues
Today, my journey continues. I recently guided 16 students through successful Black Belt gradings in Japan at the 13th International Taikai in Osaka.
I hope my story will inspire you to pursue or continue your own Karate journey. It’s a lifelong journey of learning and self-improvement.
A journey that can enrich your life in many ways, encompassing the Japanese philosophy of Kaizen, continuous improvement, a commitment to constant refinement and growth.
