Traditional Karate Explained
Explained with Clarity, Tradition, and Purpose
Go beyond punches and kicks. Discover the principles, history, and philosophy behind traditional karate.
What Is Karate?
Karate is a traditional martial art that originated in Okinawa and was later refined in Japan. More than a system of punches and kicks, it is a disciplined method of training that develops effective movement, timing, distance, and intent through structured practice.
Training is built upon three core pillars — kihon (fundamentals), kata (forms), and kumite (partner work). Together, these elements cultivate not only physical ability, but also awareness, self-control, and character.
At its heart, karate is a lifelong pursuit of refinement — of technique, mindset, and character. It is not simply about learning movements, but understanding the principles that give those movements meaning.

Mike Williams is a great instructor and his knowledge of karate is truly amazing. I look forward to every training session.

Shaun Dye
I have been learning and practising Karate with Shihan Mike Williams now for close to 20 years. In that time I have been able to learn, teach and compete as well as travel to Japan to learn and grade multiple times. I’m truly grateful to Shihan Mike for teaching and opening this world up to me.

Matt Howard
Mike Williams (Shihan, 6th Dan) is extremely knowledgeable about Karate in part because he is so closely associated with Japan. I have improved my fitness, flexibility/mobility, etc. but for me, it is the advanced learning and the enjoyable atmosphere.
