Use this interactive reference to explore 42 Shito-Ryu kata. Search for a kata, check its romaji and kanji, hear its pronunciation, and review its meaning, lineage and key facts.

Drawing on more than 40 years of karate experience and training, I created this resource to support your study between classes and help you look beyond the sequence of movements to the language, history and ideas carried within each kata.

How to Use the Kata Knowledge Table

  1. Open the table: Select the orange table heading below. The table is collapsed by default so the page remains easy to scan.
  2. Find one kata: Enter a kata name, kanji, phonetic spelling or lineage in the search field. You can also browse five entries at a time using the page controls.
  3. Review and listen: Compare the name and kanji, read the meaning, key facts and lineage, then use the audio control in the Listen field to hear the pronunciation.
  4. Close the table: Select the table heading again when you have finished. You can then continue to the study cards and quizzes without scrolling past every entry.

On smaller screens, each entry is automatically displayed as a stacked card. Each card contains the same information as the desktop table.

A note on terminology: Kata names, translations, pronunciations and accounts of lineage can vary between teachers and organisations. Use this table as a study reference while following the terminology and instruction used in your dojo.
