Questions That Keep Us Learning

This month’s edition is about something I believe sits at the heart of long-term karate practice: curiosity.

When we first begin training, it is natural to think the journey is about finding answers. We want to learn the techniques, understand the kata, improve our stances, and progress through the grades.

But over time, something interesting happens.

The more answers we find, the more questions begin to appear.

In this issue, I’m sharing a new Perspectives article on why that process is not a weakness in training, but one of karate’s greatest gifts.

Because no matter how far we progress, we are always Forever a Student.

🥋 Featured This Month

The More Answers I Found, The More Questions I Had

This month’s featured Perspectives article reflects on karate, curiosity, and remaining Forever a Student.

It explores how the questions we ask in karate often change over time. In the beginning, we may ask how to perform a movement correctly. Later, we begin asking why the movement exists, what principle it represents, and what we may still be missing.

“The kata has not changed. The student has.”

The article also includes personal reflections from teaching, training in Japan, and lessons learned from senior instructors who continued to question, verify, and refine their understanding.

For me, this is one of the reasons karate remains so rewarding after many years of training. It does not simply give us answers. It continually invites us to keep searching.

The Perspectives section of the Karate Knowledge Vault is where I share personal reflections, lessons, and observations gathered through decades of training, teaching, and continuing study.

These articles are not simply about techniques. They are about the deeper lessons karate can reveal over time — through kata, teaching, lineage, training experiences, and the ongoing process of learning.

This month’s article connects closely with one of the central ideas behind Karate Explained:

No matter how experienced we become, there is always more to learn.

🎯 This Month’s Reflection

What Question Has Changed Your Karate?

This month’s featured article is also a good topic for reflection.

What question has changed the way you understand your karate?

It may be a question about kata, bunkai, teaching, training, or even your own development as a karate-ka.

Sometimes the right question opens the door to a deeper level of learning.
